Ceasefire in Ruins as Israel Strikes Gaza

Early Tuesday, Israel launched airstrikes over many areas, marking its most comprehensive military attack in Gaza since the January ceasefire. Reports show that the most recent attack claimed over 400 lives, hence raising already high levels of conflict in the area.

Targeting northern Gaza, Gaza City, and important central and southern strip districts including Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah, airstrikes aimed at northern Gaza, Gaza City, and Among those dead were well-known Hamas leaders including Mahmoud Abu Watfa, the deputy interior minister and security chief, Ahmed Al-Hetta, the deputy justice minister, and Essam Addalees, the head of the de facto administration.

Israel Blames Hamas for Collapse of Truce

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu charged Hamas with routinely refusing to free prisoners and rejecting peace ideas put out by Steve Witkoff, the Middle East envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, together with other mediators.

From now on, Israel will strike against Hamas with rising military might, according to Netanyahu’s administration in a statement.

The most recent attacks represent a notable increase above the regular drone strikes aimed at certain terrorists by the Israeli military. The onslaught spans weeks of fruitless negotiations meant to prolong the brittle truce in effect since January 19.

A Ceasefire Agreement in Tatters

Hamas has maintained that Israel had to follow the original terms of the truce, which called for a complete departure from Gaza in return for the release of all living hostages. Netanyahu, who claims Israel’s war assault would last until Hamas’s military capability is destroyed, has not considered a pullout, nevertheless.

Reports from The Times of Israel state that Israel’s refusal to participate in talks on the next stage of the deal resulted in diplomatic efforts falling apart.

U.S. Reacts: ‘All Hell Will Break Loose’

The White House confirmed that it had been consulted before Israel’s airstrikes and expressed support for the military action.

“As President Trump has made it clear, Hamas, the Houthis, Iran—all those who seek to terrorize not just Israel but also the United States—will see a price to pay: All hell will break loose,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News.

Meanwhile, National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes echoed this sentiment, saying, “Hamas could have released hostages to extend the ceasefire but instead chose refusal and war.”

Hamas Accuses Israel of Breaking the Deal

In reaction, Hamas said Israel broke the truce agreement and dropped negotiations, therefore casting doubt on the fate of 59 still hostages. The Palestinian militant group cautioned that more violence and instability could follow from the most recent escalation.

Starting on October 7, 2023, Hamas militants started a lethal attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and kidnapping 251 hostages. While Israeli soldiers have only rescued eight and recovered hundreds of remains, most hostages have been released via ceasefire accords or other negotiations since then.

A Devastating Toll on Gaza

Regarding the Hamas attack, Israel’s military reaction has been disastrous for Gaza. Local health experts claim that since the war started, around 48,000 Palestinians have died and that 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced.

With military operations intensifying and ceasefire discussions in ruins, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza gets worse and there is no hope for near future peace.
